How can I keep my shoes from rubbing my ankles?

Whenever I wear flats or tennis shoes, I get scraped and sore on the back of my ankle from the back of the shoe rubbing. This is annoying cuz it takes forever to heal and it really hurts. Does anyone else have this problem or am I just buying the wrong shoe size?

Probably the wrong size. Or you could just have a very narrow heel

Are they too tight…wrong shoe size? If so, try gently stretching them. I usually wear them around the house with socks instead of tights (or 2 pairs, if I usually wear them with one). Someone else has recommended teaing a knot in a bag filled with water and fitting it into the shoe – then putting the shoe in the freezer – as the water freezes it will expand and stretch the leather.

If it’s not that they are too tight then you could try wearing a plaster over your heel, where it would normally rub, and do this for a week or so until the heels have naturally worn and become more flexible.

Oh yeah.. i do have this problem with heels, not with flats or tennis shoes. if you don’t want to get new shoes, all i can think of is putting a band aid in the area that you are expecting to get hurt.

You need for your ankle to build up a slightly thicker skin to prevent this happening. I often have this problem, especially when summer comes around and I want to wear thongs (I’m aussie – think Americans call them flip flops?) and I get really sore between the toes. The best thing you can do is wear them for just a little bit each day – not till the skin gets really sore and don’t let the skin break as you be back to square one. Just wear them till your skin gets a little rubbed and slightly red but not sore. Then wait until that feels completely better before wearing them again (probably the next day) and repeat this until you can wear them for longer and longer periods. Eventually you’ll have no troubles with them at all. it might take a week or slightly longer, but you’ll be happier than having sore ankles and not being able to wear them at all! Good luck.
